One of the most. Well-known attractions inside the Dhar fort is the Kharbooja Mahal. It was named after its characteristic muskmelon shaped dome which not only provides it an aesthetic appeal but also keeps the palace cool. In fact its classic architectural style keeps the structure cool by keeping the hot air rise much high above from the living space. Kharbooja Mahal is known to be endowed with splendid aerial views of the town spreading at the feet or its forbidding walls. Situated in the North-West part of the fort, this double storied structure has seven rooms on the lower floor, apparently used for more formal visitors while the four rooms on the upper floor were for personal use.

Most likely the Kharbooja Mahal was built in the 16 th century by the Mughals. Later, the mahal has been home to the Marathas who lived here and beautifully decorated the interiors of the mahal with amazing murals. This palace has a special plate and significance in the books of history of Marathas, as is said to be popularly associated with an important legend. It is during Maratha struggle, Anandi Bai, the wife of Raghunath Rao took shelter hero and gave birth to Peshwa Bajirao II in this palace on January 10, 1774.
